On World Kidney Day, Medicover Hospitals raised awareness about the silent threat of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) by organizing a bike rally in collaboration with Harley-Davidson bikers from the Harley Owners Group, Banjara Chapter. The event, flagged off by ACP Traffic Satyanarayana, emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and prevention of CKD.
Dr. Kamal Kiran, Director of Nephrology at Medicover Hospitals, highlighted that CKD is increasingly prevalent in India, driven by diabetes, hypertension, and other factors like excessive medication use, dehydration, and prolonged heat exposure, especially among laborers. Studies reveal 87% of CKD patients suffer from high blood pressure, and 37.5% have diabetes. Unfortunately, early symptoms such as leg swelling and persistent fatigue often go unnoticed, leading to severe kidney damage.
Dr. Arun Kumar Dindi, Senior Consultant Nephrologist, stressed the critical role kidneys play in filtering waste. "Once CKD progresses to its final stage, dialysis or kidney transplantation becomes the only solution," he explained. However, dialysis is costly and only purifies 50-60% of the blood. Kidney transplantation, while more effective, remains out of reach for most, with just 5% finding suitable donors. ABO-Incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation offers hope for patients facing donor incompatibility challenges.
Chief of Business Operations, Mahesh Degloorkar, reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to promoting kidney health through such initiatives. The rally, which started at Medicover Hospitals in Hitec City, passed through landmarks including Neopolis Movie Towers and Cream Café, Mokila, before returning, with participants carrying placards to spread awareness about kidney health.
