A hoarse voice means your voice sounds rough, raspy, strained, or weak. It often happens when something irritates or inflames your vocal cords. This can be temporary or continue for long time and sometimes it becomes permanent.
Common
Viral infections like cold, flu, or laryngitis
Overuse of voice like shouting, singing, or talking loudly for long
Allergies or throat irritation from dust, pollution, smoke
Acid reflux (GERD) stomach acid irritating the throat
Smoking or alcohol use
Dry air or dehydration
Thyroid or nerve issues (less common but possible if chronic)
Home remedies
Avoid talking loudly or complete rest to throat is desirable to recovery
Do steam inhalation two-three times a day to soothe vocal cords. Inhale from mouth and exhale from nose if comfortable
Warm fluids like ginger tea, tulsi tea, or warm water with honey helps
Avoid irritants, no smoking, alcohol, or spicy foods
Gargle with warm salt water twice a day
Stay hydrated drink eight to 10 glasses of water daily
Yoga
Bhramari Pranayama – calms the throat and improves vocal tone
Ujjayi Pranayama – strengthens vocal cords and improves breath control
Sujok Therapy
Apply yellow colour on the throat area of the thumb (see figure). Gently massage the area with a small probe or blunt object for two-three minutes. For faster relief, you can tape green gram (mung) seeds on that point for a few hours till you feel comfortable. Consult doctor if problem persists.
