When Cocktail was released in 2012, it became a fan favourite. Backed by memorable performances, a fresh take on relationships and a chartbuster soundtrack, the film left a lasting impression. 14 years later, director Homi Adajania revisited the franchise with Cocktail 2. While the sequel boasts stunning visuals, catchy music and an impressive Kriti Sanon, it lacks freshness.

The story revolves around Shahid Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna, a couple in a live-in relationship. While they appear happy together, cracks begin to show when Rashmika starts questioning Shahid’s reluctance towards marriage. Hoping to reconnect and spend quality time together, the two head to Sicily for a vacation and there they meet Kriti Sanon. What begins as a carefree friendship soon turns into a complicated situation, leading to heartbreak, confusion and relationship drama.

Actors’ performance

The biggest winner of Cocktail 2 is undoubtedly Kriti. Whether it’s the lighter moments or the emotionally charged

sequences, Kriti delivers a performance that stands out and often carries the film on her shoulders. Shahid is sincere in his performance and does what the script demands. However, his character doesn’t leave a strong impact. He often feels overshadowed by his female co-stars. Rashmika performs better in the latter half and her performance in the first half feels inconsistent. Some of her Hindi dialogues sound unnatural. More importantly, the chemistry between Shahid and Rashmika never reaches the level needed for audiences to become emotionally invested in their relationship.

Music

One department where the film scores well is music. Pritam’s soundtrack adds energy whenever the narrative begins to lose momentum. The songs are pleasant, well-placed and remain among the film’s stronger elements.

Direction and story

Homi Adajania presents Sicily beautifully, making the location almost feel like a character itself. The film is visually rich, with postcard-worthy frames throughout. However, the story feels dated and predictable. There are very few surprises along the way. The second half is slightly more engaging than the first, but the film never fully escapes its formulaic storytelling. At several points, it feels like a sequel that was made more for nostalgia than necessity.

FPJ verdict

Cocktail 2 looks gorgeous, sounds good and benefits greatly from Kriti’s standout performance. However, its predictable storyline, weak romantic chemistry and lack of emotional impact prevent it from becoming truly memorable. A one-time watch that works in parts but never quite captures the magic of the original.
