In a major social security initiative, the Andhra Pradesh coalition government has sanctioned 71,380 new pensions under the ‘Spouse Category’ of the NTR Bharosa scheme, aimed at providing continued financial support to elderly and disabled individuals. This move reinforces the government’s commitment to welfare-centric governance, particularly in support of vulnerable sections.
The ‘Spouse Category’ was introduced by the state in November 2023 to ensure that the surviving spouse of a deceased pension recipient continues to receive financial assistance without interruption. As per the policy, if a pensioner passes away, their spouse becomes eligible to receive the pension from the very next month, provided the necessary documents are submitted.
Between December 1, 2023, and October 31, 2024, the government accepted applications from eligible widows under this category. After thorough verification, 71,380 applicants have now been cleared to receive monthly pensions of Rs.4,000 each.
The government plans to officially launch the distribution of these new pensions on June 12, marking the completion of one year of the coalition government’s tenure. The rollout will take place across the state on the same day in a coordinated and symbolic gesture of inclusive welfare governance. To avail of the benefit, eligible widows must submit key documents, including their husband’s death certificate and their own Aadhaar card, to the staff at their respective village or ward secretariats.
Applications submitted before the end of the current month will ensure pension disbursal from the following month. This expansion of the NTR Bharosa scheme underlines the government's continued emphasis on social justice, financial dignity for women, and responsive welfare administration.
