The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council on Monday issued privilege notices to IPS officer Ammireddy in connection with alleged derogatory remarks made against State IT and Education Minister Nara Lokesh on social media.
The action follows complaints that the senior police officer had posted a controversial tweet while serving as Guntur Urban Superintendent of Police, which was alleged to have demeaned the minister. Taking note of the complaint, the Legislative Council examined the matter and subsequently referred it to the Privileges Committee for further scrutiny.
Based on the committee’s recommendation, privilege notices were formally issued to Ammireddy, directing him to appear before the Privileges Committee and offer an explanation. According to the notice, the IPS officer has been asked to attend the committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 pm and present his version on the allegations.
Council officials indicated that the committee would assess whether the alleged tweet constituted a breach of legislative privilege. The explanation submitted by Ammireddy during the hearing is expected to play a key role in determining the course of further action.
The development comes amid heightened sensitivity over social media conduct by serving officers, particularly when comments are perceived as undermining elected representatives or legislative institutions. The Privileges Committee is empowered to recommend action if it concludes that the remarks in question amount to contempt of the House or violation of its privileges. Further proceedings will depend on the findings of the committee after hearing the IPS officer’s response, officials said.
