Drawing inspiration from similar successful initiatives in other states, this program is expected to cater to women travellers who often prioritize safety and comfort while exploring new destinations.
The tours will offer exclusive packages designed for women, providing opportunities to explore Andhra Pradesh’s diverse cultural heritage, scenic landscapes, and historic landmarks in a secure and comfortable environment. The state tourism department envisions these tours as a way to encourage more women to travel independently or in groups without concerns about safety or convenience.
Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) Chairman N Balaji stated, “Women-only tours will not only benefit female travellers but also boost local tourism by making it more inclusive. We plan to ensure that the packages are affordable and well-organized, with all safety protocols in place. Initially, we are planning to roll out either a day and night trip or weekend tours.”
The pilot project will begin in Visakhapatnam, the state’s tourism hub known for its pristine beaches, lush green valleys, and historic sites. Destinations such as Araku Valley, Borra Caves, Simhachalam Temple, and the Submarine Museum are expected to be featured in the initial itineraries.
“The city’s well-developed tourism infrastructure, combined with its reputation as a safe travel destination, makes it an ideal starting point for the initiative. Based on the success of the pilot phase, the program will be expanded to other major cities like Vijayawada, Tirupati, and Kakinada,” said APTDC Chairman.
The tours will be curated to address common concerns of women travelers. Features such as women-only buses, accommodation with high-security measures, and female tour guides and coordinators will be integral to the initiative. Additionally, the government plans to provide helpline support, GPS tracking for vehicles, and round-the-clock emergency assistance to ensure peace of mind for participants.
The initiative takes cues from states like Kerala and Rajasthan, which have successfully implemented women-only travel programs. Kerala’s “She Travels” program and Rajasthan’s all-women heritage tours have seen enthusiastic participation, setting a benchmark for Andhra Pradesh’s efforts.
The tours are expected to highlight Andhra Pradesh’s rich cultural tapestry, including handicrafts, local cuisines, and traditional arts. Women travellers will also have opportunities to engage with local women artisans and entrepreneurs, providing a boost to rural and small-scale industries.
The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department is currently finalizing the details of the initiative, including partnerships with private operators and travel agencies. The program is expected to launch by mid-2025, aligning with the state’s larger goal of making Andhra Pradesh a top destination for domestic and international tourists.
With its focus on inclusivity and safety, the women-only tours initiative is poised to become a flagship program for Andhra Pradesh’s tourism sector, setting a new standard for gender-sensitive travel across the country.
