Apollo Hospitals, Secunderabad successfully treated patients suffering from Achalasia Cardia, a rare disorder that affects the oesophagus and causes severe difficulty in swallowing, using the advanced Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) procedure. Consultant medical gastroenterologists Dr. Bhaskar and Dr. Venu Gongati said there has been a noticeable rise in such cases in the post-Covid period, with infections believed to be a contributing factor. Symptoms include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, regurgitation of food, weight loss and chronic digestive discomfort.

They said the minimally invasive procedure was performed on Vijayalakshmi (37) of Warangal, who had suffered swallowing problems for years despite earlier treatment, and Ravinder (50) of Karimnagar, a high-risk cardiac patient unsuitable for conventional surgery. The doctors mentioned that POEM, performed without external incisions enables faster recovery, shorter hospital stay and discharge within a day, offering an effective alternative to conventional surgery for Achalasia Cardia.
