Citizens Specialty Hospital, Nallagandla successfully treated a 41 one year old woman from Bhubaneswar who was presented with a rare complication of a large uterine fibroid. She was also severely anaemic, with a hemoglobin level of just 6.5 g/dL, and had a large abdominal mass. The surgery was performed by Dr. Jyoti Kankanala, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Citizens Specialty Hospital, along with the supporting surgical team Dr. Pratap Varma, Dr. Vani and Anaesthetist Dr. Madhukar Goud.
The uterus along with the fibroid was removed and sent for laboratory analysis for better understanding the underlying condition. Her haemoglobin levels gradually improved and she resumed mobility with normal bowel and bladder functions following which she was discharged in a stable condition. Dr. Jyoti Kankanala mentioned that complications like twisting of uterus due to a giant fibroid are extremely rare. “Timely presentation, prompt evaluation and careful surgical management helped us prevent further complications and achieve a good outcome,” she said.
