Appalaraju taken into custody

YSRCP leader Seediri Appalaraju was taken into custody by the police in connection with a road accident case and is expected to be produced before a magistrate on Thursday, police said. The case stems from a recent accident involving a 45-year-old man, who died after being struck by a motorcycle "ridden" by Appalaraju's son on the Old National Highway at Kasibugga in Srikakulam district.

"Appalaraju was detained on Wednesday night and will be produced before a magistrate today. The relevant sections invoked against him will be disclosed in the court," Srikakulam SP KV Maheshwara Reddy informed. The SP alleged that the former minister allowed his son to ride a motorcycle despite knowing that he lacked a valid driving licence. Appalaraju also attempted to swap the identity of the accused person at the scene, "provided false information to the police and harboured the accused".

The official said the police had sufficient evidence against the YSRCP leader, including CCTV footage and other material, to proceed with the case. Referring to the alleged ruckus during the police action to detain Appalaraju, the SP said some YSRCP workers attempted to obstruct police personnel from performing their official duties.
