Condemn lathi charge on students in Delhi

Congress leaders in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday met Governor S Abdul Nazeer and submitted a memorandum condemning the lathi charge by Delhi Police against students. The Congress leaders led by state vice president Kolanukonda Sivaji, who met the Governor, underscored that the students were "peacefully protesting" at Jantar Mantar in the national capital against NEET irregularities and paper leaks. The Congress delegation drew the attention of the Governor also to the alleged "illegal detention" of the Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress Members of Parliament and other party leaders, who were protesting near the PM's residence for the cause of students.

"A delegation of the APCC submitted a memorandum condemning the brutal lathi charge by the Delhi Police on students who were peacefully protesting at Jantar Mantar," said a release from the Congress party. Sivaji, vice president (in-charge administration), APCC, said the use of force against students and opposition leaders exercising their democratic right to "peaceful protest" is a serious assault on the Constitution and democratic values.

Further, he brought to the notice of the Governor the alleged attack on the APCC state office in Vijayawada on July 22 by BJP workers. Instead of taking action against those responsible for the alleged attack, the police resorted to a lathi charge on Congress leaders and workers, in which Youth Congress president Pawan Teja and several other party leaders sustained injuries, said Sivaji. He urged that such incidents should not recur and that law enforcement agencies must act impartially.
