Hinduja Group flagship commercial vehicle manufacturer Ashok Leyland has announced plans to invest up to Rs 500 crore to set up a greenfield battery pack manufacturing facility near Chennai as part of its push into electric mobility.

The company recently held the groundbreaking ceremony for the upcoming unit at Pillaipakkam, located near Chennai. The project will involve an investment of around Rs 400–500 crore and is part of the broader investment commitments made by the Hinduja Group under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Tamil Nadu government in September 2025.

According to the company, the new plant will focus on manufacturing battery packs for electric vehicles and will play a key role in strengthening the domestic EV ecosystem. The facility is expected to support the localisation of battery pack production, which is considered crucial for reducing costs and accelerating the adoption of electric mobility in India.
