Tension prevailed at the busy MJ Market crossroads in Hyderabad on Saturday after a large group of auto-rickshaw drivers staged a protest, demanding the immediate implementation of their long-pending demands by the government. The agitation led to severe traffic congestion in the area and disrupted normal movement for over an hour.

The protest came a day after RTC employees continued their own demonstrations, highlighting growing unrest among transport workers in the city. Auto drivers gathered at the junction and raised slogans against what they described as government inaction on issues affecting their livelihood.

The drivers said that local auto operators are facing increasing difficulties due to the presence of district-permit autos and vehicles from neighboring states operating within the city. They argued that such competition has significantly affected their earnings and demanded stricter regulations on city operations. They also called for an increase in meter fares, stating that current rates are no longer sufficient given the rising cost of living.

In a dramatic turn during the protest, one auto driver allegedly poured diesel on himself in an attempted act of self-harm. Fellow drivers and police personnel intervened immediately and prevented a serious tragedy. The incident created panic among protesters and bystanders.

The agitating drivers also reminded the government of promises made during elections, accusing it of failing to deliver on commitments to the auto-rickshaw community. Among their demands were free registration for autos, waiver of permit fees, and relief from what they described as excessive traffic fines.
