The BJP upset AAP’s applecart led by Arvind Kejriwal. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a historic victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, unseating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and returning to power after more than 26 years. The BJP won 48 out of the 70 seats, while AAP was reduced to just 22, and the Congress failed to secure any seats. The election, held on February 5, saw a decisive shift in voter sentiment, culminating in a resounding mandate for the BJP.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the victory, calling it a triumph of “development, vision, and trust.” Addressing party workers, he emphasized that Delhi’s electorate had rejected “corruption and theatrics” in favor of governance. “The party that was born out of an anti-corruption movement found itself drowning in corruption. Delhi suffered due to its arrogance. The people have voted for progress, and this is Modi’s guarantee,” he said.
The AAP’s electoral downfall can be attributed to multiple factors, including anti-incumbency after a decade in power, corruption scandals, leadership crises, a lack of alliance with Congress, poor infrastructure, and ineffective municipal governance. The BJP’s strategic campaign, mobilization of vote banks, and strong leadership propelled it to a landslide victory.
A major upset occurred in the New Delhi constituency, where BJP’s Parvesh Verma defeated Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by 4,089 votes. Other AAP heavyweights, including Manish Sisodia, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Somnath Bharti, and Durgesh Pathak, also lost their seats, further highlighting the extent of AAP’s decline. Notably, in 13 constituencies, the Congress vote share exceeded the BJP’s winning margin, indirectly impacting AAP’s chances.
Reacting to the loss, Arvind Kejriwal conceded defeat, congratulating the BJP and pledging that AAP would serve as a "responsible opposition." He acknowledged the people’s verdict and expressed hope that the new government would fulfill the expectations of Delhi’s citizens.
With this decisive victory, the BJP has reclaimed control of the capital, marking a significant expansion of its political footprint. The party has vowed to prioritize governance and development, promising to leave “no stone unturned” in transforming Delhi. The first session of the new Vidhan Sabha will see the presentation of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, shedding light on the alleged corruption scandals under the AAP government.
