Every year on July 28, World Hepatitis Day reminds us that viral hepatitis continues to be one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease and liver cancer. This year's theme, "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down," calls upon governments, healthcare providers and communities to remove the barriers that prevent people from accessing timely diagnosis, vaccination and treatment. Many individuals discover the infection only after significant liver damage has already occurred.
Vaccination remains one of the strongest weapons against hepatitis B. Every newborn should receive the vaccine as early as possible after birth, followed by completion of the recommended vaccination schedule. Individuals with diabetes, obesity, chronic liver disease, a family history of hepatitis B or liver cancer or those who have received blood transfusions before improved screening practices were introduced should undergo hepatitis B and C testing.
Hyderabad is witnessing an increase in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease due to sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy dietary habits and rising obesity. By breaking down barriers to awareness, testing and treatment, the city can take meaningful steps toward a future where viral hepatitis no longer threatens lives. Protecting the liver today is an investment in a healthier tomorrow.
