The Telangana Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu, on Wednesday, took a dig at BRS for their different stance in Assembly when it came to bills. The Assembly rules which the BRS government adopted while in power in 2014-15 are being opposed by the same party now when in opposition, he charged.

The arguments arose after Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy introduced the Telangana Bhu Bharati (Record of Rights in Land) Bill, 2024 in the Assembly on Wednesday after the speaker announced suspension of rules for the day.

It would replace the RoR Act 2020 including the Dharani system that the BRS government introduced four years ago. The draft copy of the Bhu Bharati bill copies were given to members of the house while Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy was highlighting the salient features of the new bill that will address the shortcomings of the previous Act.

Raising point of order, BRS MLA T Harish Rao pointed to the rule book and stated that the government must circulate the new bill copies at least a day in advance for them to go through it thoroughly to present their views on it and also to give amendments on it.

MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi stated that agenda for Wednesday was given to members very late night on Tuesday so they did not come prepared for the debate. He appealed to the government to put off their plans for passing the bill the same day (Wednesday) when the bill was introduced and instead take up discussion on Thursday.

The opposition benches appealed to the Speaker and the Legislative Affairs Minister to give clarity. At this juncture, D Sridhar Babu criticized the double standards of the BRS party while in power and when in opposition.

“We all know how many bills the BRS government passed suspending rules and not giving time for opposition to submit amendments or speak on the particular bill. However, the Congress government is totally unlike the BRS. We would like to be democratic and would like to hear the views of the opposition members to bring a comprehensive new policy that would help the state population who faced enough miseries with Dharani and the previous policy,” Sridhar Babu said.

After Ponguleti finished his speech, the Speaker gave the opposition members to submit their written amendments before 5 pm and also announced that discussion on the new Land Bill would be taken up the following day (Thursday).
