Environmental activists, youngsters, social workers, influencers, and residents staged a protest near Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park in Jubilee Hills on Sunday against the reported tree felling activities around the park’s eco-sensitive zone.
Protesters formed a human chain, held a candlelight demonstration, and wore green bands on their wrists to express solidarity for the protection of the park and its greenery. Several participants carried placards demanding immediate steps to safeguard the biodiversity and forest cover surrounding the national park.
Speaking during the protest, activist Prashanth said traffic issues in Hyderabad cannot be solved merely by constructing flyovers. “The solution is not more flyovers but better public transport. If we cannot stop tree cutting near KBR Park, it will be a huge loss for humanity,” he said.
Another environmental activist said, “The more roads and flyovers the government builds, the more vehicles will come onto the roads. We want the greenery to remain and the park to be protected for future generations.”
A protester also raised concerns over the shrinking eco-sensitive zone around the park. “The eco-sensitive zone around KBR Park was originally one kilometre, but in some places it has reportedly been reduced to just a few metres. These are not just trees, they are essential for the city’s ecological balance,” the activist said.
Protesters alleged that nearly 2,000 trees could be affected by the ongoing works and demanded a proper buffer zone around the park to protect Hyderabad’s environmental heritage.
