Collector calls for collective efforts

NTR District Collector Dr. G. Lakshmisha and Vijayawada City Police Commissioner P. Rajasekhar Babu said on Thursday that public participation is very important in preventing accident and that collective effort is needed to create awareness among the people and make the district an accident-free district.

The posters, pamphlets, booklets and banners, which are the promotional materials for the road safety month to be organized in the district for a month from the 16th of January under the auspices of the Transport Department, were released at the District Collector Camp Office in Vijayawada.

Speaking on this occasion, District Collector Dr. G. Lakshmi said that road safety month is organized across the country every year under the auspices of the Central Government to create awareness among the people about road accidents. He said that road safety meetings have been held from time to time to prevent accidents, and by reviewing the causes of accidents and taking immediate steps, accidents have been prevented to some extent.

City Police Commissioner P. Rajasekhar Babu said that the police department is taking strict measures to prevent road accidents. Legal action is being taken against those who do not follow traffic rules and cases are being registered against those who drive without wearing seat belts and helmets.

He said that special vigil has been set up against those who indulge in drunk driving, talking on the phone while driving, carrying passengers beyond the limit, rash driving and signal jumping which are the key factors in road accidents, and cases are being registered online.

District Transport Officer A. Mohan said that the Road Safety Month is being observed from the 16th to February 15th and rallies, awareness seminars, essay writing and drawing competitions are being organized to create awareness on road safety. He said that with the help of the district administration, voluntary organizations in coordination with the police, medical and health, transport, R&B, national highways and other departments are working to prevent road accidents by involving the public and making the Safety Month a success. 

Transport Department officials R. Praveen, K. Venkateswara Rao, K. Sivaram Goud, Uday Sivaprasad, DV. Ramana, NAS Varma, KDV Ravikumar, B. Sravani, Satyanarayana, Transport Employees Association Zonal President M. Rajubabu, Deputy DMHO J. Indumati and others participated in the release of the promotional materials.
