RGPRS leads awareness drive in Nagarkurnool

The Congress party has intensified its opposition to the change of name of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), terming it an example of the BJP’s regressive politics. As part of this campaign, the Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangathan (RGPRS) has initiated field visits across villages in different districts to create awareness among scheme beneficiaries about the Centre’s unilateral move, the disadvantages, and the likely impact on rural workers.

As part of this initiative, an RGPRS team visited Bolghatpalle village in Nagarkurnool district on Monday under the leadership of RGPRS District Chairman Chhatru Naik. Addressing the gathering, RGPRS State Chairman Rachamalla Siddeshwar strongly criticised the NDA government for attempting to remove Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the employment guarantee scheme.

Siddeshwar alleged that the present NDA government was neglecting labourers by reducing the Centre’s share of funds while increasing workdays, thereby misleading workers and weakening the scheme. He said that RGPRS and Congress teams would be touring various districts across the state in the coming days to meet and sensitize the rural folk on the anti-people actions of the Centre.

He also informed the workers that Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, had strongly questioned the government in Parliament on behalf of MGNREGA labourers and assured them that a future Congress government would protect and strengthen the scheme.

Former sarpanches Srinivas, Congress leaders Gopal Naik, Venkatesh, Seetharam, Parvathalu, Sushila, Srinu, and several MGNREGA workers participated in the programme.
