A fresh controversy in Madhya Pradesh illustrates how land deals and family business interests can fuel allegations of conflict of interest even as governments push development agendas

In our country, corruption continues to be a deeply entrenched issue despite repeated promises of reform. Political parties routinely spend crores during elections, luring voters with cash, freebies, liquor, and gifts. A significant portion of voters, swayed by these inducements, often overlook governance failures. In the Bihar Assembly polls, for instance, women were reportedly drawn to the Rs 10,000 per month scheme. Candidates in each assembly seat are estimated to spend between Rs 10 crore and Rs 50 crore throughout the country. In this environment, it is questionable whether corruption can genuinely serve as a decisive electoral issue.
A fresh controversy in Madhya Pradesh illustrates how land deals and family business interests can fuel allegations of conflict of interest even as governments push development agendas. A major political storm has erupted following an investigative report on extensive land purchases by the family of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav in and around Ujjain. The report, which received prominent coverage on a satellite TV channel, claims that since Yadav assumed office in December 2023, his extended family members and associated real estate companies have acquired at least 137 plots spanning approximately 168 acres, valued at around Rs 45 crore.
These acquisitions supplement the family’s pre-existing holdings. Prior to December 2023, the family reportedly owned around 180 acres across more than 100 plots, bringing the total documented land interests close to 300-335 acres. Many of the newer plots are located in areas designated for infrastructure upgrades, highway expansions, and land-use conversions under the Ujjain Master Plan 2035. This timing has raised questions about potential conflicts of interest, particularly as the state prepares for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2028 and accelerates urbanization in Ujjain.
Details of the transactions
Land records examined in the investigation list buyers including Chief Minister Yadav’s wife Seema Yadav, daughter-in-law Shalini Yadav, brothers Nandlal and Narayan Yadav, Narayan’s wife Rekha, their son Abhay, and first cousins Govind and Nilesh Yadav. Several deals were reportedly routed through four family-linked real estate firms. Around 111 acres are situated near upgraded highways such as the Ujjain-Badnagar and Ujjain-Indore routes, as well as proposed road networks and zones slated for conversion from agricultural to residential or commercial use.
Some family members have partnered with builders to launch housing projects on these lands, including schemes registered with the Madhya Pradesh Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MP RERA). Critics argue that government announcements on infrastructure have boosted land values, potentially benefiting the family. In one cluster, associates linked to cousin Govind Yadav acquired over 41 acres in Gangedi village near highway junctions through multiple transactions.
CMO’s firm defense
The Chief Minister’s Office has strongly rejected any wrongdoing. Sources close to Dr. Mohan Yadav emphasize that neither the Chief Minister nor his immediate family members, such as his wife Seema, have purchased new land since he took office. Yadav’s own agricultural holdings remain unchanged at approximately 17 acres, as declared in his election affidavit.
The family has a longstanding presence in real estate and land development in Ujjain, with many properties acquired well before 2023. Supporters note that a large share of the family’s agricultural land was purchased between 2008 and 2019. They maintain that all transactions are fully registered, transparent, funded through legitimate business activities, and properly declared where required.
Any appreciation in land values, they argue, results from the government’s broader development initiatives that benefit the entire region. BJP leaders have dismissed the controversy as a politically motivated smear campaign by the opposition aimed at distracting from the government’s development agenda. They insist no laws have been violated and urge focus on governance rather than unproven allegations.
Opposition’s strong counter-attack
The Congress party has responded aggressively, demanding a high-level probe by agencies such as the CBI or ED, or even a Supreme Court-monitored investigation. Leaders including KC Venugopal and Jairam Ramesh have accused the ruling dispensation of enabling a “plunder of Mahakal’s land” in the sacred city of Ujjain. They have revived the slogan “Na Khaunga, Na Khane Doonga” to question standards of probity.
Broader context of political corruption
The controversy revives national debates about separating public office from family business interests. Politicians’ relatives engaging in land and real estate activities frequently attract scrutiny, testing public trust in governance and transparency.
Interestingly, similar allegations of systemic corruption have recently targeted the Congress party as well. A hard-hitting investigative report highlighted alleged irregularities involving Congress leaders at national and state levels, including in Karnataka where the party is in power. The report pointed to possible kickbacks in welfare schemes, undervalued real estate deals, and patterns of cronyism. Congress leaders rejected the report as “BJP-sponsored propaganda” and a “witch-hunt.”
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has strongly defended Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav amid the ongoing land controversy in Ujjain. Describing the allegations of large-scale land purchases by the CM’s family as a “BJP conspiracy,” Akhilesh claimed the reports are politically motivated and aimed at defaming Mohan Yadav to facilitate a change in leadership.
Speaking to reporters in Lucknow, Akhilesh said, “The BJP has hatched a conspiracy to defame Mohan Yadav. If these allegations are against Mohan Yadav, then the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh has acquired 300-600 acres of land. This is nothing new. He used to work in real estate earlier. Does the BJP not know this?” Akhilesh emphasised that Mohan Yadav’s family has long been involved in the real estate business, suggesting the land deals are legitimate business activities predating his tenure as CM and not instances of wrongdoing. By drawing parallels with other leaders, he sought to downplay the issue as selective targeting rather than a genuine case of impropriety.
