Cybercrime and online piracy will continue to evolve despite major enforcement actions, cautioned Senior IPS officer and Special Chief Secretary (Home), C V Anand. His comments came in the backdrop of the arrest of ‘iBomma’ founder Ravi, a key figure linked to online movie piracy. In a post on X on Wednesday, Anand said it is “utopian” to assume that hacking, piracy or any form of cybercrime will vanish with a single arrest.
Drawing parallels with traditional crimes such as theft, burglary and cheating, he noted that such offences have never stopped even after major gangs were caught. Anand stressed that human greed—especially the desire to earn quick money—continues to fuel the expansion of cybercrime networks. As long as people seek shortcuts, cybercriminals will find new ways to exploit vulnerabilities, he warned.
He emphasised that the only sustainable solution is prevention. Citizens must proactively secure their digital spaces, safeguard online accounts and remain alert to suspicious activity. Early recognition of threats, he said, can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim.
Highlighting a popular quote shared by filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli—“Nothing comes free in life”—Anand reiterated that the public must understand this truth and act responsibly in the digital world, where risks are growing rapidly and attacks are becoming more sophisticated.
