A historic spiritual pilgrimage, the 3rd Dhammayatra – 2026, is currently underway, with approximately 150 Buddhist monks and upasakas(learners) walking about 400 kilometers from Siddhartha Buddhavihara in Kalaburagi (also known as Gulbarga), Karnataka, to Buddhavanam in Nagarjunasagar, Telangana. The month-long journey, running from February 2 to March 3 is titled “Awakening the Buddha’s Teachings: Swarnabhumi to Buddhabhumi – A Journey of Hope.”
It brings together Thai and Indian Buddhist monks (Bhikkhus), along with Upasakas (lay devotees), to promote the core Buddhist principles of peace, compassion, non-violence, and universal harmony. The yatra, which began at Siddhartha Buddha Vihara in Kalaburagi, will enter Telangana via the Madigi border on February 10, 2026. Participants are passing through numerous villages and towns across the two states, symbolizing inter-state unity, cultural harmony, and spiritual awakening.
The pilgrimage is expected to conclude at Buddhavanam, a prominent Buddhist heritage theme park and spiritual site near Nagarjunasagar on March 3, 2026.Buddhavanam, developed by the Telangana Tourism Development Corporation, stands as one of India's key Buddhist landmarks, featuring grand stupas, sculptures, and meditative spaces tied to the region's ancient Buddhist history, including associations with the philosopher Nagarjuna.
Organized with the involvement of the Gagan Malik Foundation, this rare interfaith and international spiritual walk is described as a once-in-a-generation event aimed at spreading the Buddha's message to broader audiences. Gagan Malik, President of the Gagan Malik Foundation, has appealed to the press and media to cover the Dhammayatra extensively, helping amplify its powerful call for global peace and compassion.
