Rich tributes paid to Former PM P V Narasimha Rao on his 104th Birth Anniversary
Rich tributes were paid across Telangana to former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao on the occasion of his 104th birth anniversary. Leaders cutting across party lines came together to honour the legacy of one of India’s most distinguished statesmen, who laid the foundation for modern economic reforms and social transformation in the country.
In a solemn and respectful tribute held at PV Ghat on Necklace Road, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu led the homage on behalf of the State government. Speaking on the occasion, Bhatti described Narasimha Rao as the "best social reformer" who laid the foundations of an egalitarian society through progressive land reforms during his tenure as the Chief Minister of then undivided Andhra Pradesh. These reforms, Bhatti pointed out, were in line with the initiatives of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, aimed at social justice and equitable distribution of resources.
The Deputy CM highlighted that Rao, a Bharat Ratna awardee, was not only a political visionary but also a multifaceted personality who left an indelible mark on India's democratic, educational, and economic fabric. “As the country’s first Human Resource Development Minister, PV advocated for a uniform education system to ensure democratic values and access to learning for all,” Bhatti recalled.
Bhatti Vikramarka particularly emphasized Rao’s pivotal role during the 1991 economic crisis when he took over as Prime Minister. “Despite severe political and financial challenges, PV Narasimha Rao brought about systemic stability. He liberated India's pledged gold reserves and introduced landmark economic reforms that turned India into a strong global economy,” he noted.
Addressing land rights, Bhatti stated that over 24 lakh acres of land had been distributed to the poor during Congress rule. However, the last decade had seen major setbacks due to alleged mismanagement under the Dharani land registration system. “The previous regime caused immense hardship to the poor by enabling encroachments and stripping rightful landowners of their dignity,” he said. He added that the Congress-led state government was now reclaiming those lost rights through the Bhu Bharati Act, aimed at protecting the land and identity of the underprivileged. “This People’s Government is committed to safeguarding the poor and following the path shown by PV,” he asserted.
Floral tributes at PV Ghat by Congress Ministers and Senior Leaders
Several other senior Congress leaders and ministers also gathered at PV Ghat to offer floral tributes and commemorate the late Prime Minister’s immense contributions to the nation.
Minister Ponnam Prabhakar praised Narasimha Rao as a visionary whose economic reforms positioned India as a global power. He also announced that the P.V. Narasimha Rao Memorial in his native village of Vangara would be completed before the next birth anniversary. “PV’s legacy in the fields of economy and education is unparalleled, and future generations must continue to draw inspiration from his work,” he stated.
Minister Konda Surekha, Congress veteran V. Hanumantha Rao, and other dignitaries also remembered PV’s statesmanship and intellectual contributions, asserting that his legacy is deeply intertwined with India's economic resurgence and political maturity.
Minister for Labour and Mines Dr. G. Vivek Venkataswamy also paid homage and remembered the former Prime Minister’s role in navigating India through a period of political and economic volatility.
TPCC Working President and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud paid glowing tributes, calling PV a scholar-statesman who was fluent in multiple languages, a poet, translator, and intellectual of rare calibre. “His economic reforms are the bedrock of India’s current march towards a five-trillion-dollar economy. His establishment of Navodaya Vidyalayas was a visionary step in providing quality education,” he said.
Governor of Haryana Bandaru Dattatreya, in a tribute from Chandigarh, remembered Rao’s statesmanship, saying his leadership not only transitioned India into a liberalized economy but also stabilized its political landscape during turbulent times. Dattatreya added that Rao’s administrative legacy continues to influence India's policy-making even today.
The events across Telangana on the occasion of PV Narasimha Rao’s 104th birth anniversary were marked by solemn remembrance, renewed admiration, and pledges to continue his visionary path for a socially just and economically strong India.
