Metro India News | AMARAVATI :

The Andhra Pradesh government’s free power scheme for handloom workers has begun delivering tangible benefits, bringing relief and cheer to thousands of weaver families across the state. Implemented from April 1, the scheme has resulted in zero electricity bills for the first month, triggering positive responses from beneficiaries.

Under the initiative, the government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu provides up to 200 units of free electricity per month to handloom weavers and 500 units to powerloom workers. Officials said the programme is aimed at easing the financial burden on weavers while revitalising the traditional sector.

According to official data, over 1.04 lakh families are being covered under the scheme, including 50,252 handloom households and 6,995 powerloom families. Electricity bills distributed in recent days reflect zero payment dues, with field officials informing beneficiaries that no payment is required under the scheme.

Weavers have expressed satisfaction, noting that the initiative offers monthly savings of about Rs 720 for handloom workers and Rs 1,800 for powerloom operators, translating to annual benefits of Rs 8,640 and Rs 21,600 respectively. Many have described the scheme as a crucial financial support amid rising input costs.

The government has also rolled out complementary measures for the sector, including pensions of Rs 4,000 per month for weavers above 50 years, 15% yarn subsidy, thrift fund allocations, and loans under central schemes. Efforts are also underway to boost marketing through exhibitions and online sales platforms.

Textiles Minister S. Savitha said the government’s objective is to ensure year-round employment for weavers while restoring the sector’s economic strength. She added that the free power scheme is a key step towards providing financial security and sustainable livelihoods for handloom families.
