GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan informed on the occasion of 77th Republic Day Celebrations that major infrastructure projects under H-CITI, including ROBs, RUBs and flyovers, are being taken up to reduce traffic congestion and improve urban mobility.
The celebrations were held in a grand manner at the GHMC head office on Monday. After receiving the police guard of honor, GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan unfurled the national flag. Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi and Deputy Mayor Srilatha Shobhan Reddy were present on the occasion.
They handed over cheques amounting to Rs 855 crore to 7,127 Self Help Groups. Under self-employment initiatives, financial assistance of Rs 6 lakh was provided to the Prem Leela Transgender Group which is engaged in jute bag manufacturing and is providing livelihood to five transgender persons. The GHMC Commissioner delivered his republic day message on the occasion.
He mentioned that 2025 marked a significant milestone in GHMC’s journey, with the merger of 27 municipalities, expanding GHMC’s area from 650 sq km to 2,053 sq km, and increasing the population to 1.34 crore. For administrative convenience, the number of wards was increased from 150 to 300, circles from 30 to 60, and zones from six to twelve, he informed. He mentioned that the commissioning of Waste-to-Energy, RDF, Bio-CNG and C&D waste processing plants had strengthened solid waste management .
He also mentioned that dengue cases were reduced by 30% through GIS-based monitoring and the VBD app, and that GHMC received appreciation from the Government of India. Under Vanamahotsavam, 25 lakh saplings were planted across Greater Hyderabad, and 40 new landscaped parks were developed, Commissioner Karnan said. He also stated that a comprehensive storm water master plan for the core urban region is being prepared. He appealed to citizens to pay taxes on time to accelerate Hyderabad’s development and to cooperate with GHMC for a clean, healthy and fast-growing city.
