Suzlon Group Vice Chairman Girish Tanti expects the Centre to convert over 40 GW of uncontracted renewable energy capacity into Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) projects, which combine wind, solar and battery storage to deliver reliable power.

Official data shows around 45.34 GW of awarded renewable capacity is still awaiting power purchase agreements (PPAs). The government, along with REIAs — SECI, NTPC, NHPC and SJVN — is examining solutions, including auctioning this capacity, while developers continue talks with discoms to seal PPAs.

Tanti said the government is reassessing the entire uncontracted block and is likely to move it toward FDRE. He noted rising consumer acceptance for FDRE despite the higher tariff compared to standalone projects.

Solar tariffs currently range between Rs 2.38 and Rs 2.56 per unit, while wind power costs Rs 3.70–3.90 per unit. FDRE price discovery has taken place at around Rs 5.5 per unit. Tanti said FDRE ensures 24x7 clean energy and is already cheaper than continuous coal-based supply. States have also raised concerns over intermittency in standalone wind and solar projects, further strengthening the case for FDRE adoption.
