Grain markets steady, wheat seen firming

Grain prices remained largely unchanged in key spot markets across India, though traders expect wheat prices to firm up in the medium term due to rising festive demand and weather-related concerns.

Wheat prices in Kota, Indore and Vashi stayed steady as improved arrivals balanced buying interest from millers and traders. Market participants said demand is likely to strengthen between August and November during the festive season.

Concerns over a strong El Niño affecting rabi sowing and wheat production could also lend support to prices, although comfortable government and trade inventories may limit sharp gains.

Maize prices remained stable after recent gains driven by worries over lower kharif acreage and production. Traders said below-normal rainfall during August and September could affect yields, while higher temperatures may add further pressure on output.  Rice prices also held steady across major markets. However, expectations of improving export demand from West Asia could support basmati rice prices in the near term, particularly as shipping movement through the Strait of Hormuz normalises.

Overall, grain markets remain watchful of weather developments and export demand trends.  Weather conditions and monsoon progress will remain crucial for price direction, while export demand, crop sowing trends and festival-led consumption are expected to influence grain market sentiment ahead.
