Greenland's Prime Minister Múte B. Egede affirmed on Friday that Greenland is for the "Greenlandic people" and its residents do not wish to become Americans. However, Egede expressed openness to discussions with US President-elect Donald Trump, who has shown interest in Greenland.

Egede acknowledged the island's strategic importance, stating he is open to enhanced cooperation with Washington, according to the Associated Press. His comments followed Trump’s assertion that he might use force or economic measures to make Greenland—a semi-autonomous Danish territory—a part of the United States, citing national security concerns.

Egede recognized Greenland’s geographical ties to North America and the American perspective of Greenland as part of their sphere. While he has not yet spoken to Trump, Egede emphasized on dialogue and cooperation. “Cooperation means working toward solutions,” he said.

Asked in Copenhagen if he had contact with Trump, Egede responded, “No, but we are ready to talk.” He has been advocating for Greenlandic independence and criticized Denmark for its colonial legacy and treatment of indigenous Inuit people.

“Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish or American. We want to be Greenlandic,” Egede declared during a press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Trump’s interest in Greenland has caused concern in Denmark and Europe. Frederiksen said she had requested a meeting with Trump, though it is unlikely before his inauguration. The US, a NATO leader and key ally of the EU, has shocked Europeans by suggesting force against an ally.
