A simmering power struggle within the Congress party in Kamareddy has escalated into a full-blown factional battle between senior leader and Government Adviser Shabbir Ali and TPCC General Secretary Gaddam Chandrasekhar Reddy. What began as a political alliance has now transformed into one of the most talked-about internal conflicts in Telangana Congress politics.

For nearly four decades, Shabbir Ali remained the undisputed face of the Congress in Kamareddy. His influence extended from the grassroots to the state leadership, and he was widely regarded as the party's tallest leader in the constituency. However, critics within the party have long alleged that his dominance left little room for the emergence of a strong second line of leadership.

From Disciple to Political Rival

The current conflict traces its roots to Gaddam Chandrasekhar Reddy's entry into the Congress. After being expelled from the then TRS, he joined Congress with the support of Shabbir Ali around four years ago. Subsequently, his wife Gaddam Indupriya became Kamareddy Municipal Chairperson with Congress backing. For a period, Chandrasekhar Reddy functioned as a close associate of Shabbir Ali. The relationship, however, began to change during the 2023 Assembly elections.

Assembly Elections marked the Turning Point

When Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy contested from Kamareddy, Shabbir Ali was fielded from Nizamabad Urban by the Congress high command. During the campaign, Revanth Reddy's brother Kondal Reddy took charge of election management in Kamareddy.

According to party sources, Gaddam Chandrasekhar Reddy actively worked alongside Kondal Reddy, while sections of Shabbir Ali's supporters allegedly did not fully cooperate. Following Revanth Reddy's narrow defeat in Kamareddy, Chandrasekhar Reddy's proximity to the Chief Minister reportedly increased.

His growing influence was reflected when he was appointed TPCC General Secretary, a move that reportedly came without Shabbir Ali's consultation. The appointment marked a significant shift in the local political equation and deepened tensions between the two camps.

Municipal Elections exposed Deep Divisions

The factional divide became increasingly visible during the Kamareddy municipal elections. Chandrasekhar Reddy successfully secured party tickets for several of his supporters, while Shabbir Ali pushed for his own loyalists.

The rivalry resulted in parallel camps within the Congress, leading to internal competition in several wards. Party leaders believe the factionalism weakened Congress electorally and contributed to avoidable setbacks. The divisions were also cited as a reason why the Vice Chairperson post eventually went to BRS despite Congress controlling the municipality.

Complaints reach Disciplinary Committee

The conflict has now reached the state leadership. Supporters of both leaders lodged complaints before the Congress disciplinary committee. Shabbir Ali's camp accused Chandrasekhar Reddy of damaging party unity and creating parallel structures within the constituency. In response, Chandrasekhar Reddy's supporters alleged that Shabbir Ali was preventing the growth of emerging leaders and weakening the party from within.

The disciplinary committee reportedly sought explanations from both sides. Chandrasekhar Reddy appeared before the committee and presented his version of events, while Shabbir Ali also submitted his explanation regarding allegations raised against him.

Audio Controversy and Police Complaints

The rivalry took a new turn after the circulation of an audio clip allegedly containing remarks against TPCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud, Congress leaders and women party members. Chandrasekhar Reddy's wife and former Municipal Chairperson Gaddam Indupriya filed complaints with party leaders and police authorities.

Indupriya also lodged a complaint with district police alleging online trolling and harassment by individuals linked to Shabbir Ali's camp. Police reportedly registered cases against several persons in connection with the matter.

Shabbir Ali, however, dismissed the audio clip as fabricated and politically motivated. He maintained that the recording was fake and claimed it was circulated to tarnish his image and create divisions within the party.

The continuing feud has raised concerns among Congress workers and senior leaders. Many fear that if the factional battle remains unresolved, the party could suffer politically in future local body elections, including MPTC and ZPTC polls.

With complaints, counter complaints, disciplinary proceedings and police cases dominating the political discourse, the Kamareddy Congress unit finds itself deeply divided. The focus has shifted from strengthening the party to settling internal scores, turning the constituency's Congress politics into a major talking point across Telangana.

The big question now is whether the party leadership will succeed in restoring unity or whether the Shabbir Ali versus Gaddam Chandrasekhar Reddy rivalry will further deepen ahead of future elections.
