Flood flow from upper catchment areas to Srisailam reservoir continues with an inflow of 88,835 cusecs of water from Jurala project and 8,824 cusecs from Sunkesula reservoir to Srisailam reservoir upto Friday . At present, the water level in the reservoir is 818.20 feet as of 6 am on Friday. The water storage is 39.5529 TMCs. In the summer season, a rare scenario has occurred with respect to water flow. The Krishna river, which has dried up and turned into a desert, is in spate.
The Jurala project is getting flooded to so much that the gates are being opened. Usually, after June, Jurala and Srisailam projects flooded from above. On the contrary, floods in the month of May are rare. With the onset of early southwest monsoon this year, the flow in the Krishna river has increased. The water level, which started slightly from the 16th of May, reached 90,000 cusecs on Thursday night.
12 gates of the Jurala project were opened and water was released downstream to Srisailam. Jurala's full storage capacity is 9.65 TMCs. Experts say that lifting the gates of the dam due to mid-southwest monsoon in a single water year is a rare thing. The Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rains in several parts in Andhra Pradesh over the next three days under the influence of southwest monsoon.
