Inflows surge past 4 lakh cusecs at Prakasam Barrage

Metro India News | AMARAVATI : Heavy rains triggered by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal have raised water levels across rivers and streams in Andhra Pradesh. At Prakasam Barrage, inflows surged past 4 lakh cusecs on Thursday, leading to the first danger warning.

“Budameru is carrying around 3,000 cusecs of water, but the situation is completely under control. There is no flood threat and people need not panic,” the Collector said. He added that while streams such as Pothulavagu and Nallavagu are witnessing heavy flow, all precautionary arrangements are in place. Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha also held a high-level review with officials, instructing them to remain vigilant, especially in the Krishna basin and other low-lying areas.

At Prakasam Barrage, officials confirmed that inflows and outflows touched 4.05 lakh cusecs, forcing them to raise the first danger signal. Disaster Management Authority Managing Director Prakhar Jain said that if levels rise further, nearly 95 villages downstream could face an impact. “Rehabilitation centres are ready, and people in vulnerable hilly areas are being advised to move to safety,” he said.

Home Minister Anitha directed all districts to set up 24x7 control rooms and keep residents continuously informed.

Last year, incessant rains caused Budameru to overflow, inundating several colonies along the bund and low-lying areas in Vijayawada. Hundreds of families were forced to evacuate to relief camps.
