Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Saturday asserted that India has undergone a historic transformation under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emerging as a global powerhouse in science and technology.

Addressing the Vigyan Vaibhav 2026 Space Convention Project Expo at Gachibowli Indoor Stadium on the National Science Day, the Central minister said the term 'Vigyan Vaibhav' reflects the nation’s intellectual strength and prosperity.

Recalling the discovery of the Raman Effect by C. V. Raman, he said India’s scientific excellence has long stood independent of colonial rule. In the past 11 years, India has strengthened its global standing in innovation, research and space missions, he noted.

Highlighting the investments, Kishan Reddy said allocation for the science and technology sector had increased from around Rs.2,700 crore in 2013 to Rs.41,000 crore in 2026 — a nearly 1500% rise. India’s bio-economy expanded from $10 billion in 2014 to $140 billion, with over 6,000 deep-tech startups now operational.

He pointed to initiatives such as the Anusandhan National Research Foundation and the India AI Mission, under which over Rs.10,000 crore is being invested. India currently ranks third in research publications and startups, fourth in PhDs awarded and sixth in patents, he said.

Reddy added that India aims to achieve Net Zero by 2070 and that Deep technology would be crucial in this journey. He stressed the importance of AI, clean energy, green hydrogen and quantum technology. He also noted that nearly 43% of STEM enrollments in India are women, surpassing the global average.

Emphasizing the vision of “Developed India 2047”, the Minister urged educational institutions to collaborate with industry and encourage youth to pursue research aligned with national priorities. (NSS)
