The ongoing US-Israeli conflict in Iran is affecting industries in Maharashtra, with exporters facing delays due to global supply chain disruptions. Containers carrying automobile components and other goods from the region are reportedly stuck at ports, slowing shipments to Europe and other destinations.
The Marathwada Exporters' Forum under the Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture (CMIA) said about a thousand small, medium, and large units in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar are directly or indirectly involved in exports. Key industrial hubs such as Waluj, Chikalthana, and Shendra house manufacturers of automobile parts, steel, machinery, and medicines whose products reach various international markets.
Rohit Jaju, head of the Marathwada Exporters' Forum, said containers at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority in Navi Mumbai, carrying automobile components destined for Europe, have been delayed since the war began. Agricultural exports, including fruits and crops bound for the Middle East, have also been temporarily halted.
He added that if the conflict continues, companies may have to reroute shipments, adding 20-22 days to delivery time, increasing transport costs and overall export expenses. This may affect customer retention, as international buyers might look for alternative vendors.
The disruption has also impacted imports. Jaju noted that products such as apples and kiwis may cost more due to interrupted European shipments. Shipping companies have stopped operations amid the conflict, forcing some businesses to return materials to their factories. Post-war exports could also become more expensive if additional surcharges are imposed.
Industries in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar are now closely monitoring the situation, hoping for a resolution that will allow supply chains to resume smoothly and maintain competitiveness in international markets.
