Expedite Old City Metro works: Revanth Reddy

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday directed officials to take immediate steps to procure new coaches for Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) in view of the steady rise in passenger footfall.

Reddy held a detailed review meeting with senior HMRL officials and discussed the expansion of Metro Rail infrastructure, increasing ridership, ongoing works and preparations for the proposed Phase-2 expansion. He noted that the growing number of passengers was putting additional pressure on the existing Metro Rail services and said adequate measures should be taken to improve capacity and passenger convenience.

The Chief Minister directed officials to add more coaches to existing Metro trains and initiate the process for procuring new coaches. He stressed that the increasing ridership should be anticipated while planning future requirements so that the Metro system can efficiently handle the growing demand.

Reddy suggested that HMRL officials consult their counterparts in Delhi Metro to seek technical assistance and guidance on the appropriate technology for constructing the 7.5-km corridor. He said adopting suitable technology would help ensure efficient execution of the project while taking into account the specific requirements and challenges associated with the Old City area.

The review meeting assumes significance as the State government has recently acquired 100 per cent shares of L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Ltd through HMRL, bringing the Metro Rail operations under greater government control.

Meanwhile, the State government’s proposal for the Phase-2 expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project is pending consideration with the Centre. The proposed expansion is expected to significantly improve connectivity to several parts of the city and strengthen the existing Metro network.

The Chief Minister also reviewed the preliminary arrangements for the ‘Invest Telangana Global Summit’, scheduled to be held in December. He directed officials to ensure that the summit is organised on par with international standards and effectively showcases Telangana as an attractive destination for global investments.

He emphasised that the summit should not merely be an investment promotion event but should also result in tangible commitments and projects for the State. Officials were asked to focus on attracting investments across key sectors and prepare a comprehensive strategy to facilitate new projects and employment opportunities.

Reddy also directed officials to submit a detailed report on the investments attracted and the progress achieved following the global summit held last year. The report should include details of investment commitments, projects that have moved into implementation and the status of pending proposals, he said.

Senior officials, including Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju, Special Chief Secretary Jayesh Ranjan, Government Advisors Ramakrishna Rao and NVS Reddy, Metro Rail Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmed and Additional Managing Director Ajit Reddy, among others, participated in the meeting.

Speed up MGBS to Chandrayangutta stretch

Revanth Reddy also reviewed the progress of the proposed Metro corridor in the Old City. He instructed officials to complete the road expansion works from Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) to Chandrayangutta, which is considered crucial for facilitating the proposed Metro alignment and improving connectivity in the area.

He further directed the officials to initiate the tendering process for the Metro works along the 7.5-km MGBS-Chandrayangutta corridor, which forms part of the proposed Phase-2 expansion. The Chief Minister stressed the need to avoid unnecessary delays and ensure that preparatory and construction-related activities move forward in a coordinated manner.
