Commissions 60 MWh merchant BESS
Renewable energy major Juniper Green Energy has commissioned 60 MWh of its 100-MWh merchant battery energy storage system (BESS) project at Bikaner in Rajasthan, marking a significant step in its energy storage expansion, the company said on Wednesday.
The project has been developed through its subsidiary, Juniper Green Cosmic Pvt Ltd, and represents the company’s first operational merchant BESS in India. Merchant BESS projects are grid-connected storage systems that generate revenue through direct participation in electricity markets without long-term power purchase agreements.
Juniper Green Energy said the commissioning positions it as an early mover in India’s rapidly evolving energy storage segment, which is increasingly seen as critical for grid stability and renewable energy integration. The remaining 40 MWh capacity of the Bikaner project is expected to be commissioned shortly.
Once fully operational at 100 MWh, the Bikaner facility will rank among the largest operating battery energy storage projects in the country. The project is expected to support multiple revenue streams, including merchant power trading, grid balancing services, and participation in ancillary power markets.
Commenting on the development, Juniper Green Energy CEO Ankush Malik said battery energy storage systems are a key value-accretive asset class that strengthens the company’s renewable energy portfolio while improving grid reliability and diversification.
In addition to the Bikaner project, Juniper Green Energy has installed a larger 400 MWh BESS capacity at Fatehgarh in Rajasthan. The company said this project is under advanced stages and is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2026, further strengthening its presence in India’s energy storage sector.
