KIMS Gachibowli performs robot assisted valve replacement

KIMS Hospital, Gachibowli performed a robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement on a 37-year-old patient from Rajahmundry, marking a milestone in minimally invasive cardiac surgery in Hyderabad. Dr. Nisarga, Chief Cardiothoracic, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgeon, said the patient had been suffering from severe mitral stenosis caused by chronic rheumatic heart disease. Dr. Nisarga explained that in mitral stenosis, the mitral valve becomes thickened and narrowed, reducing blood flow and placing strain on the heart.

If left untreated, the condition can lead to serious complications and may even become life-threatening. The complex procedure was performed on July 23 and lasted for more than five hours. Unlike conventional open-heart surgery, which requires splitting the breastbone, the robotic approach uses small keyhole incisions. The patient was taken off ventilatory support within hours of the operation and was able to walk the following day.
