KIMS Hospital celebrated a decade of excellence in bone marrow transplantation, marking over 150 successful procedures, many involving complex cases like blood cancer, thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and aplastic anemia.
Dr. Narendra Kumar Thota, Head of Hemato-Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at KIMS, highlighted the hospital’s journey during the anniversary event. He noted the shift from joint to nuclear families has made finding fully matched donors difficult. However, with advancements in transplant technology, even a 50% match now offers a viable path to recovery.
Earlier, patients had to travel to cities like Vellore or Mumbai for such treatment. Today, Hyderabad stands proud with world-class care right here at KIMS,’ Dr. Thota said. Despite the challenges of post-operative infections and complications, KIMS maintains a success rate above the national average, supported by skilled specialists and cutting-edge facilities.
Dr. Thota praised the donors and said ‘their selflessness has given many patients a second chance at life. We urge more people to come forward and consider becoming bone marrow donors.’
The event was attended by Hyderabad District Collector Harichandan Dasari, philanthropists Sudha Reddy and Pinky Reddy, and KIMS leadership. Guests also included past recipients and donors, underscoring the emotional and medical impact of the program.
