KIMS Sunshine Hospital, Begumpet, observed World Stroke Day by organizing an awareness session on early recognition and timely treatment of stroke. Doctors emphasized that stroke is a medical emergency where every minute counts, and immediate action can save lives and prevent permanent disability.

They explained that a stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is blocked, causing brain cells to die within minutes. Quick medical attention is crucial to prevent severe brain damage and long-term complications.

Doctors urged the public to remember the F.A.S.T. mnemonic for recognizing stroke symptoms — Balance (sudden loss of balance or giddiness), Eyesight (sudden blurring or loss of vision in one or both eyes), Face (drooping of one side of the face), Arm (weakness or numbness in one arm or leg), Speech (slurred or unclear speech), and Time (time to call an ambulance immediately). Other symptoms such as a sudden severe headache, confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness also require urgent medical attention.

Highlighting the “Golden Hour” — the first 60 minutes after stroke onset — neurologists stressed that timely treatment is vital. Dr. C. H. Gopal, Senior Consultant Neuro Physician, said early recognition can save millions of brain cells and prevent disability. Dr. Vinod Kumar, Consultant Neuro Physician, added that clot-busting drugs or mechanical thrombectomy procedures performed within this window can restore blood flow and improve outcomes.

Dr. Niveditha Sai Chandra A., Consultant Neuro Physician, said stroke-ready hospitals with 24/7 CT or MRI facilities and trained teams can begin treatment immediately, giving patients the best chance of full recovery. Doctors concluded that quick recognition and response can mean the difference between complete recovery and lifelong dependence.
