The humble Koodai, once a staple in Indian households before plastic bags became common, is making a stylish comeback at Kausalyam 2026, the Crafts Council of Telangana's exhibition in Hyderabad. Coimbatore-based social enterprise Koodai by Saras has transformed the traditional woven basket into handcrafted lifestyle products featuring wildlife, heritage and cultural motifs. A tiger-themed basket promoting wildlife conservation is among the highlights. Founded by homemaker Saraswati and her son Saravanan, the venture now supports over 65 women artisans who weave each bag by hand from their homes. Made from recycled plastic, the eco-friendly collection includes shopping baskets, sling bags and customised wedding gifts. The initiative blends sustainability, traditional craftsmanship, women's empowerment and contemporary design to revive an age-old Indian craft.
