17 lakh silver articles hallmarked with HUID in three months

In the first three months since implementation, over 17.35 lakh silver jewellery items have been hallmarked with the mandatory Hallmarking Unique Identification (HUID), indicating strong acceptance among jewellers and consumers.

While the Silver Hallmarking Scheme has been voluntary since September 1, 2025, HUID marking is now compulsory for all hallmarked silver articles. Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi described HUID as a major step toward purity assurance and curbing fake hallmarking. Each piece carries a unique six-digit alphanumeric code, enabling complete digital traceability and enhanced consumer protection.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) made HUID mandatory for all hallmarked silver jewellery and artefacts starting September 1, 2025. HUID is laser-marked alongside the BIS Standard Mark, the word SILVER, and the purity grade. Purity grades 925 and 800 account for nearly 90% of all hallmarked items. In FY 2024-25, around 32 lakh silver articles were hallmarked, showing significant growth following HUID introduction.

Regional trends indicate the southern region leads in volume, followed by western and eastern regions. Among product types, payals (anklets) represent the largest share, mostly in 800 purity, followed by silver diyas in 800 and 925 purity. Consumers can verify authenticity via the BIS CARE mobile app, which provides details on purity, jewellery type, jeweller, and Assaying & Hallmarking Centre.

The HUID system for silver follows the gold hallmarking framework, introduced in June 2021. Currently, 1,610 BIS-recognised Assaying & Hallmarking Centres support over 2.08 lakh registered gold jewellers, with more than 56 crore gold pieces hallmarked so far, including 7.81 crore in 2025-26 alone.

This move is a significant step in ensuring transparency, consumer protection, and trust in the silver jewellery market.
