Showgirl Maren Wade alleges trademark infringement over singer’s album branding

Alawsuit filed in a California federal court has accused global pop star Taylor Swift of trademark infringement over the title and branding of her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl.

According to the complaint, performer and writer Maren Wade — legally Maren Flagg — claims Swift’s album branding closely resembles her own Confessions of a Showgirl brand, which began as a Las Vegas Weekly column in 2014 and later became a live stage show.

The lawsuit states that both titles share a similar structure and commercial appeal, and target overlapping audiences. Wade claims her “Showgirl” brand spans performances, writing and digital media.

Swift’s album, her 12th studio release, reportedly sold four million copies in its first week. The cover features the singer in a Las Vegas showgirl-inspired look.

The suit also names Swift’s trademark management company, record label and merchandising partners as defendants. Wade is seeking a permanent injunction to stop the use of the “Life of a Showgirl” name, along with financial damages.

According to the filing, the US Patent and Trademark Office had earlier flagged possible confusion with existing trademarks.

A representative for Swift has declined to comment on the matter.
