Raising concerns in Parliament on Tuesday, Lok Sabha MP Dr. Kadiyam Kavya highlighted safety risks in homes built under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), particularly pointing to construction flaws and electrical hazards. She demanded state-wise data on related incidents since 2021, updates on safety audits in flood-prone areas, and stronger mechanisms to ensure structural safety and agency accountability.

Responding to her query, Minister of State Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani noted that PMAY-G, launched in 2016, offers financial aid of Rs 1.20–1.30 lakh for self-constructed homes using local materials and trained masons. Complaints are addressed within 15 days through a multi-platform grievance system, including CPGRAMS and state helplines.

Despite safety concerns, multiple evaluations have praised PMAY-G’s impact. A NIPFP study showed faster construction, employment growth, and improved household conditions. Assessments by NIRD&PR and NITI Aayog highlighted better infrastructure, lower maintenance, and enhanced dignity for beneficiaries, especially women.

The government has also implemented safeguards: disaster-resilient designs, CSR support for eco-friendly tech, Panchayat-level material support, SHG involvement, and convergence with other rural schemes. Digital tools like the Awaas+ 2024 app, geo-tagging, and Aadhaar-based payments further ensure transparency.

While acknowledging PMAY-G’s transformative impact, Dr. Kavya urged the Centre to tighten safety oversight. ‘The scheme has improved rural lives, but safety lapses put families at risk. Urgent corrective measures are needed,’ she stressed.
