Retired Director General of Police Dr. J. Poornachandra Rao described on Saturday Mahatma Jyotirao Phule as a visionary who recognized that social inequalities were the real chains binding the people of the country. He was speaking on the occasion of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule’s 199th birth anniversary at a program organized at the Media Centre in Laxdikapool. Leaders from BC, SC, ST and Muslim communities attended the event in large numbers and paid tributes to the great social reformer.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Sangem Suryarao, President of the BC Association. Speaking on the occasion, Sangem Suryarao urged called upon BC, SC, ST and Muslim communities to turn Phule’s dreams into reality by achieving political power and establishing social justice. Dr. J. Poornachandra Rao recalled that Phule understood that without removing caste discrimination, lack of education and social exclusion, the freedom achieved would benefit only a few.
Dr. Poornachandra Rao stated that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s thoughts were deeply aligned with those of Jyotirao Phule. Dr. Rao emphasized that only a democracy founded on the values of equality, self-respect and fraternity could endure. It was Ambedkar who enshrined these values in the Indian Constitution, Dr. Rao recalled. He cited the concentration of national wealth — with one-third of the country’s riches in the hands of just 211 billionaires — as a stark example of growing inequality.
Concluding his speech, Dr. Poornachandra Rao underlined that true nation-building is possible only by practicing the values of equality, justice, and dignity in daily life. He expressed the hope that the ideals of Phule and Ambedkar would be taken forward by the present generation.
