In a groundbreaking medical procedure, a 16-month-old baby underwent robotic surgery remotely from a distance of 1,600 kilometers. The child was born with a congenital kidney condition called ureteropelvic obstruction, which blocked urine flow from the kidney to the bladder. Using India’s indigenously developed SSI Mantra robotic system, Dr. V. Chandramohan, Managing Director of Preeti Kidney Hospital, performed the surgery from Gurugram while the baby was at Preeti Kidney Hospital in Kondapur. The procedure, completed in just one hour with 5G connectivity, marks the world’s youngest telesurgery performed to date, with the child discharged the next day.
In another case, a woman in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, who experienced urinary leakage after a hysterectomy, underwent advanced robotic surgery remotely. Local surgeons, trained only in open procedures, coordinated with Preeti Hospital, enabling Dr. Chandramohan to perform the operation through the SSI Mantra system. The surgery lasted one hour and 20 minutes, representing the first-ever cross-state telesurgery in India.
These surgeries were supported by a team including hospital executives Dr. Roopa and Dr. Rangappa, senior surgeons Dr. Ramakrishna, Dr. Hemant, and Dr. Soundarya, pediatric specialists, coordinators, technicians, and SSI Mantra engineers and directors. Dr. Chandramohan highlighted that telesurgery allows expert surgeons to reach remote areas, connect multiple robots simultaneously, and serve as a training platform for local doctors, making advanced healthcare accessible across India.
