A consumer commission in Thane has directed Ola Electric to replace a defective electric scooter or refund the full amount to a Navi Mumbai-based buyer, citing clear deficiency in service and unfair trade practices.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (Additional Thane) observed that the scooter had multiple defects from the beginning and the company failed to address repeated complaints. The vehicle, purchased in July 2024 for Rs 96,997, reportedly developed issues within two days, including acceleration problems and breakdowns during rides.

The complainant highlighted a major safety concern when the battery level suddenly dropped from 21 per cent to 3 per cent within 500 metres, causing the scooter to stop abruptly in traffic. Despite several emails and messages, the company allegedly did not respond until the issue was raised on social media.

The commission noted a pattern of negligence, stating that even after the scooter was taken for servicing, it was not properly handled or updated. When it was eventually returned months later, it was found in an unclean and damaged condition.

The panel ruled that withholding updates, failing to fix defects, and delivering the vehicle during the case proceedings amounted to unfair practices.

The commission ordered Ola Electric to replace the scooter with a new one of the same specifications or refund the full amount with 6 per cent annual interest. It also awarded Rs 20,000 for mental distress and Rs 15,000 as litigation costs.
