Scholars at Osmania University say the institution has failed to clearly communicate key PhD admission rules and deadlines, leaving several researchers worried that their admissions may be cancelled despite having qualified and joined through due process. This uncertainty has triggered widespread anxiety, financial strain and anger among scholars, with students alleging that essential procedural information was either poorly circulated or inaccessible.

The issue has also drawn strong criticism from student groups, including the Students’ Federation of India Students' Federation of India, which has demanded immediate intervention and greater transparency in PhD admissions and academic procedures.

Activists argue that the present situation reflects administrative negligence and a lack of accountability within public higher education systems, where scholars are being forced to repeatedly defend their academic continuation despite having secured admission through merit.

They further state that universities must function as spaces of research, inquiry and intellectual growth, but the current climate is undermining confidence in public institutions of higher learning and affecting students from financially weaker backgrounds.

SFI Osmania University secretary Ajay Kumar Dandu said the issue is not a mere procedural lapse but a serious injustice against scholars who earned their places through hard work and merit. He added that public universities must ensure transparency and accountability, and that students will continue their democratic struggle until all academic concerns are resolved.

Research scholar Khalid said students are facing continuous uncertainty that is affecting their academic progress and mental well-being, stressing that the purpose of joining the university was to pursue research and contribute to knowledge creation.

The situation has reignited debate over governance in public universities and the need to protect research scholars while ensuring institutional accountability urgently.
