In a significant welfare initiative, Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced that a proposal to increase salaries for GHMC sanitation workers has been submitted to the Chief Minister. The announcement came during the inauguration of a health camp at Komaram Bheem Bhavan in Banjara Hills on Tuesday, aimed at supporting the health of GHMC frontline workers.
Organized under the “Healthy Telangana” campaign, the health camp offered medical check-ups and distributed free medicines and personal health kits to over 450 sanitation workers. Minister Prabhakar personally underwent a health screening and inspected the diagnostic equipment and supplies. Accompanied by Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan, and Hyderabad District Collector Dasari Harichandan, the minister praised the sanitation workers for their critical role in maintaining city cleanliness and hygiene.
He announced that such health camps would become a monthly practice and outlined additional support measures including allotment of Indiramma housing, slum development, and expanded educational facilities for workers’ children, including hostel access and guaranteed Gurukul school admissions. Mayor Vijayalakshmi encouraged workers to use the health kits, especially during the monsoon season. She also assured jobs for family members of workers who pass away or become unfit for service.
Commissioner Karnan highlighted that the initiative also covers veterinary and entomology staff. Several medical departments participated, screening for common and chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. The initiative is being lauded as a comprehensive step toward improving both the health and socio-economic well-being of urban sanitation workers.
