Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu has underscored the strategic importance of Godavari waters for the irrigation, drinking, and industrial needs of North Andhra, stating that the Polavaram Left Main Canal remains the backbone of this effort.

During an inspection of ongoing works at the Pampa aqueduct near Annavaram in Kakinada district, the minister reviewed progress on critical stretches of the canal. He also visited bridge construction sites at the National Highway crossing near Arempudi and Gavarayya Koneru villages before holding a detailed review meeting with officials at the Tuni R&B Guest House.

Addressing officials and executing agencies, Ramanaidu made it clear that delays would not be tolerated. He directed contractors to accelerate bridge works at key crossings, stressing that timely completion is essential to ensure uninterrupted water flow. The minister revealed that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has set a firm target to complete the first phase of the canal works by June and ensure the supply of Godavari waters up to Anakapalli.

He emphasised that the government’s priority is to prevent water scarcity for the rapidly expanding industrial corridor in Anakapalli, alongside meeting agricultural and drinking water demands. Criticising the previous administration, the minister alleged that no funds were allocated for the left canal over the past five years and that key works were prematurely closed, adversely affecting regional interests.

Providing an update on progress, Ramanaidu stated that works worth ₹1,460 crore are currently underway, with nearly 76% completion achieved so far. Once operational, the canal is expected to fill 110 minor irrigation tanks up to Tuni, stabilising irrigation across 28,557 acres. Additionally, the completion of the Pithapuram uptake sluice will benefit another 67,674 acres under the Yeleru ayacut.

The project is also expected to address drinking water needs for approximately 5.23 lakh people across 143 villages along the canal route. Further, 98 tanks upstream of Payakaraopeta will be filled, extending irrigation support to 48,368 acres.

The minister also noted that compensation of ₹30.38 crore has been disbursed to displaced families in Kummarilova. Reaffirming the government’s commitment, he said the ultimate goal is to transform North Andhra into a water-secure and agriculturally prosperous region through expedited completion of the Polavaram Left Canal.
