Minister for Revenue and Housing Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy has directed officials to expedite the construction works of the Nagarjuna Sagar Left Main Canal Under Tunnel (UT) in Paleru, which supplies irrigation to approximately four lakh acres in Khammam district. He emphasised that the completion deadline for the project is July 10, ensuring that water is available to farmers for the upcoming monsoon season without fail.

The Minister on Friday made a surprise inspection of the ongoing canal works at Jujjularaopet village in the Kusumanchi mandal of Khammam district. During his visit, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy noted that heavy rains last year caused a breach in the under tunnel (UT) of the main canal near the Paleru reservoir in September. To prevent inconvenience for farmers, temporary measures were implemented at that time to ensure the supply of irrigation water.

The repair work on the UT canal has officially commenced on a permanent basis, with an allocation of Rs 14.20 crore, and is expected to be completed within a specified timeframe. Once the canal, which serves as a vital resource for agriculture in Khammam district, is repaired, approximately four lakh acres of farmland in the district will receive irrigation, including 1.33 lakh acres in the Paleru constituency, Ponguleti said.

In anticipation of the rainy season, officials have been directed to prioritise the project and to work in two shifts each day, if necessary, to ensure the construction is finished on schedule.
