Telangana's caste census has ignited a political storm, with BC Welfare and Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and BRS leader Kalvakuntla Kavitha presenting differing views on its findings and implications.
Ponnam asserted that all political parties must clearly state their stance on the caste census and actively participate in the assembly discussions. He emphasized that the survey was conducted as a movement and that the total population in the state has been calculated. Future action based on the findings will be decided in the cabinet meeting. Ponnam expressed pride in being part of the process and called on all BC communities to celebrate the achievement.
However, he criticized the lack of cooperation from key political leaders during the survey, highlighting that except for Kalvakuntla Kavitha, no member of the Kalvakuntla family provided their details. Ponnam alleged that some individuals deliberately withheld information and even resorted to hostility against survey teams. Furthermore, he demanded former CM KCR's presence in the assembly, stating that if KCR truly supports BCs, he must participate in the discussion. He assured that the report would not be shelved or ignored.
Meanwhile, BRS leader Kalvakuntla Kavitha questioned the Congress government’s calculations, arguing that the BC population could not have decreased. She insisted that the figure might be around 50-52%, while the government claims it is 46.2%. Kavitha urged CM Revanth Reddy to verify the numbers sincerely.
She demanded a 56% reservation for BCs and called for a bill in the assembly, asserting that a mere discussion is insufficient. She also stressed that local elections must only be held after increasing BC reservations and that survey documents should be made public for transparency.
