The Jalagam Vengalrao Park in Hyderabad turned into a hub of smiles and wagging tails on Sunday as 24 desi puppies found loving homes at the Indie Puppy Adoption Mela hosted by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Sunday.

Inaugurating the mela, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, accompanied by Khairatabad Zonal Commissioner Anurag Jayanthi, urged citizens to cherish adopted puppies as family members. “Adopting indie dogs is not just about love, it is about responsibility. Every adoption helps in reducing the stray dog population and builds a culture of care,” he said. In a symbolic gesture, he personally handed the first adopted puppy to CH Sai of Kukatpally.

The mela, held under the campaign “Be a Hero. Adopt, Don’t Shop”, featured 39 dewormed and vaccinated puppies. Families, children, and animal lovers were seen bonding instantly with the pups, many decorated with small ribbons. From little children proudly cradling their new companions to young couples and elderly citizens smiling with joy, the adoption drive captured a mix of warmth and hope.

GHMC Chief Veterinary Officer Abdul Vakeel, Dr. K. Chakrapani Reddy, and volunteers guided adopters on responsible pet care. The park was filled with scenes of people petting puppies inside cages, interacting with veterinarians, and leaving with their new family members in hand.

By the end of the day, 24 puppies were adopted — a promising sign for the future of promoting local breeds. GHMC announced that more such drives will soon be organized to encourage adoption of healthy, loyal, and low-maintenance indie dogs across the city.
